Choose which work to handle internally
Job advertising and recruiting can complement one another. A board placement does not necessarily include sourcing, screening or interview coordination; confirm the actual features and terms of any provider you evaluate.
- Consider the staff time available to manage incoming applications.
- Identify whether direct candidate outreach is required.
- Compare the complete scope and cost instead of comparing headline prices alone.
Prepare the role brief
Write down the information a candidate needs to evaluate the position before the search begins.
- Specify the surgical discipline and credentials required.
- Document theatre access, imaging, anesthesia support and equipment.
- Clarify case ownership, referrals and perioperative responsibilities.
Plan the work location in Boston.
Name the street address, municipality and county, and keep Boston neighborhoods separate from neighboring cities and towns. The City of Boston lists 24 neighborhood entries, while Cambridge, Somerville, Brookline, Newton and Quincy are separate municipalities, and MAPC groups 101 cities and towns into eight subregions. Brookline is a town in Norfolk County and Boston is in Suffolk County. Coverage on this site is limited to Massachusetts; a hospital in New Hampshire or Rhode Island falls under a different licensing authority.
Give the hiring team one brief for each facility, with clinical work, technician delegation, weekend duties and location commitments stated together. Massachusetts asks veterinarians for 15 hours of continuing education each calendar year, and employers with 25 or more employees must disclose the pay range in job postings, so state both in the brief. O*NET OnLine, using Bureau of Labor Statistics 2025 wage data, lists the Boston-Cambridge-Newton, MA-NH area median annual wage for veterinarians above the national median, which is context candidates may bring to an offer. Tufts University’s Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine in North Grafton awards the D.V.M. in Massachusetts, and the Board’s application page adds ECFVG or PAVE completion for graduates of non-AVMA accredited schools. This site describes employer hiring coverage without claiming a Boston recruiting office.

The Board’s practice regulation requires a full service veterinary facility to have diagnostic imaging capacity, sterilized equipment for aseptic procedures, anesthetic equipment kept in working order, oxygen delivery and a separate examination room, which a Boston surgeon brief should confirm before it describes the operating area. Angell’s own site lists surgery, anesthesiology, diagnostic imaging and critical care among the services at its Boston hospital. The Board may waive the examination requirement for a certified veterinary specialist and restrict the license to the specialty, so a Boston surgery search should ask whether the candidate is a board-certified surgeon or a general practitioner who performs surgery. A Boston surgery brief should also name the anesthesia monitoring and recovery staff for each surgery day.
Plan Massachusetts credential checks before the start date.
Massachusetts licenses veterinarians through the Board of Registration in Veterinary Medicine within the Division of Occupational Licensure. Assign a person to check license status and the renewal date, record the verification date and resolve questions with the Board. The Board’s licensing pages list no technician license category, so check any technician credential the employer requires with the organization that issues it, along with any specialty credentials.
